Majulah Singapura

Hey braddas and sistas,

Selamat Pagi man! It's been a while since i bangun so early. Today i had to wake up at 9am cos they shutting down the water in my apartment lah. If i wake up at 10am, no water, cannot drop atom bomb and bathe. Now i'm enjoying my waffle with nutella and watching the morning news on tv. Suddenly they played the star spangled banner (USA national anthem) and then i realised how many of us know how to sing and meaning of the national anthem. How many of us will sing it loud and proudly? Ok, i give u the benefit of the doubt. I also don't recall ever being taught the national anthem in school, so how did we learn it and learn it right? So i've decided to print the lyrics and meanings.

National Anthem : Majulah Singapura (Onward Singapore)

Mari kita rakyat Singapura
sama-sama menuju bahagia
cita-cita kita yang mulia
Berjaya Singapura

Marilah kita bersatu
Dengan semangat yang baru
Semua kita berseru
Majulah Singapura
Majulah Singapura

Translation

We the people of Singapore
together march towards happiness
our noble aspiration
to make Singapore succeed

Let us all unite
in a new spirit.
Together we proclaim:
Onward Singapore
Onward Singapore

History

The National Anthem was written over 1956-57 just before Singapore gained self-rule from the British.. The composer, the late Encik Zubir Said, wrote the anthem around the two words, "Majulah Singapura" or "Onward Singapore". It was launched on 3 December 1959 together with the National Flag and the State Crest.

Later,
Mat Love

Some of my Malay students even mispronounced certain words.. the line 'cita-cita kita yang mulia' become 'cita-cita cita yang mulia'...
